Vehicle Description

The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL (W198) was the first iteration of the SL-Class grand tourer and fastest production car of its day. Introduced in 1954 as a two-seat coupe with distinctive gull-wing doors. Built by Daimler-Benz AG, the direct fuel injection production model was based on the company's highly successful yet somewhat less powerful carbureted overhead cam straight 6 1952 racer, the W194. The idea of a toned-down Grand Prix car tailored to affluent performance enthusiasts in the booming post-war American market was suggested by Max Hoffman, Mercedes accepted the gamble and the new 300 SL – 300 for its 3.0 liter engine displacement and SL for Sport Leicht (Sport Light) – was introduced at the 1954 New York Auto Show rather than the Frankfurt or Geneva gatherings company models made their usual debuts. Immediately successful and today iconic, the 300 SL stood alone with its distinctive doors, first-ever production fuel injection, and world's fastest top speed. The original coupé was available from March 1955 to 1957. This 300 SL has 17,443 miles and is an original west coast delivery Gullwing. Powered by the legendary 2,992cc SOHC inline six cylinder with Bosch mechanical fuel injection mated to a four speed manual transmission. Coil spring independent front suspension helps the 300 SL drive like a dream. This car true survivor Gullwing has the correct chassis, engine and body numbers. This Mercedes is in the Gullwing Group and Eric Lemoine 300 SL Registries. One of the few to arrive through California this car was owned for almost 20 years by Ottmar Thomas of Visalia before being sold to a well known racing driver and Mercedes Benz restorer Lothar Motsenbacher. This car was originally Ivory and was properly repainted the highly desirable Mercedes Benz Silver “DB180” a number of years ago. The bumpers and grill have been exceptionally re-plated, but the rest of the trim and brightwork is original. The beautiful original Rose leather interior shows excellent patina with no cracks or splits. The very straight body and exceptionally clean undercarriage is rust and accident free. The motor runs excellent with proper oil pressure and temperatures. The 4-speed transmission shifts with precision and ease. Thiz Gullwing just received a major service performed by Park Place Mercedes-Benz of Dallas, TX. Included are detailed service records.  Chassis No. 198.04035500548 - Engine No. 198.980.5500575 - Body No. 198.040.5500529
