This 1939 Nimbus Model C was produced by the Danish firm Fisker & Nielsen of Copenhagen, and it was previously owned by actor Steve McQueen. The bike is finished in red with gold pinstriping and it is powered by a 746cc four-stroke inline-four paired with a three-speed transmission. Bike equipment includes a riveted steel-strip frame, a driveshaft, a double-sprung solo saddle, a passenger pillion with a front loop grab handle, and a telescopic fork. The matching sidecar features a windshield, a running light, a drum brake, a leaf spring, and a luggage rack. The rig was sold at the McQueen estate auction in Las Vegas in 1984 and underwent a one-year refurbishment circa 2010. This Model C with sidecar is now offered with a McQueen Certificate of Authenticity.
The bike was refinished in red with silver accents and gold pin-striping under previous ownership and features a 3.3-gallon fuel tank mounted between the upper spars of the riveted steel-strip frame. Equipment includes black saddles, a passenger front loop grab handle, rectangular rubber knee grips mounted to the upper frame spars, a valanced front fender, front and rear mud flaps, a headlight, a taillight, a horn, frame-mounted passenger foot pegs, and a center stand.
Silver-finished 19 inch rims wearing Avon Safety Mileage MkII tires are laced to hubs equipped with 180mm drum brakes at both ends. An oil-damped telescopic fork with black rubber gaiters as well as dual springs beneath the seats comprise the bike’s only suspension.
The sidecar is finished in red with gold pin-striping and features leaf spring suspension, a two-piece curved windshield assembly with a clear windscreen, and a 19 inch wire-spoke wheel with a drum brake and an Avon Sidecar Triple Duty tire. Additional equipment includes a rear luggage rack, and a fender-mounted running light, rear reflector, and a mud flap. Interior appointments include a black vinyl seat and side panels as well as a black rubber floor mat.
The pressed-steel handlebar accommodates electric switchgear, an adjustment knob for a friction-plate damper in the steering neck, and a brass tag listing the model, serial number, and specifications. The 120-km/h VDO speedometer contains a five-digit odometer showing 91k kilometers (~57k miles). True mileage is unknown.
The air-cooled 746cc four-stroke inline-four was factory rated at 22 horsepower and it breathes through a single-barrel in-house carburetor. A chrome heat-shielded four-into-one exhaust manifold flows into a low-mounted black exhaust pipe with a perforated four-outlet fishtail finisher. Features include an integrated cast iron crankcase/cylinder block with a detachable cast alloy sump as well as a single overhead camshaft driven by shaft-and-bevel gears and exposed valve gear
Power is sent to the rear wheel through a single-plate dry clutch, a three-speed transmission with sidecar gearing, and a driveshaft.
This Nimbus sidecar rig is accompanied by a McQueen Certificate of Authenticity that is from the November 1984 Steve McQueen estate sale auction in Las Vegas and is signed by the actor’s daughter and son.
