The Ferrari Berlinetta Boxer was produced between 1973 and 1984 and was slotted between the popular front-engine Daytona and the Testarossa. It was the first Ferrari to use the mid-engined flat-12 motor. Introduced as the 365 GT4 BB it utilized a steel body with aluminum roof, doors and engine access cover.
The successful 365 GTB4 BB was updated as the BB 512 in 1976 and was introduced at the Frankfurt Auto Salon. The name resurrected the of the earlier Ferrari 512 racer and the 512 referred to the car’s 5 litre, 12- cylinder engine. The engine was enlarged to 4943 cc, with an increased compression ratio of 9.2:1. The addition of fuel injection in 1981 was a desired change although power was down slightly to 360 horsepower. The chassis remained unaltered but wider rear tires meant the rear track grew slightly.
The minor external differences between the 365 GTB4 BB and the 512 included a new chin spoiler that was incorporated into the bumper and a NACA duct on the lower side provided cooling for the exhaust system. At the rear, there were now twin tail lights and exhaust pipes each side, instead of triple units as on the 365 GT4 BB.
The Bosch K-Jetronic CIS fuel injected BB 512i was introduced in 1981 was the last of the BB series. The fuel injected motor produced cleaner emissions and offered a better balance of performance and driveability. The 512 BBi could reach 0-60 in 5.4 seconds and had a top speed of 174 miles per hour.
External differences between the BB 512 and 512i, besides badging, include a change to metric sized wheels and the Michelin TRX metric tire system, small white running lights in the nose, and red rear fog lamps outboard of the exhaust pipes in the rear valance. A total of 1,007 BB 512i models were produced as compared to 928 of the non-fuel injected 512.
The example presented is in pristine condition and is surely one of the finest 512 BBi’s available. It has only been driven 8500 miles which equates to only about 250 miles per year. It has been maintained in as-new condition and the black paint sparkles. The black leather interior is also exceptional and shows few if any signs of use. It is presented with all the tools, books and records. With only a thousand of the fuel-injected 512 BBi’s produced this is an opportunity to acquire the best of this very desirable and drivable Ferrari model.
